Joan is Sycamore CrossFit’s CIO (Chief Inspiration Officer). She has been working at SCF since April 2017.
When/how did your health and fitness journey begin?
I have always been active, but I became much more serious about my health and fitness in 2012. I come from a family with some serious health issues, and seeing the impact of diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and mental health challenges definitely played a part in my commitment to health and fitness.
When did you first start coming to Sycamore CrossFit?
Why did you want to be part of the SCF Team?
The gym had quickly become my home away from home, and I knew when I was asked to join the team it would be much more than just a job for me. It was the right fit all the way around!
What do you do at Sycamore CrossFit?
My official title is “Chief Inspiration Officer.” My main job is making sure our members feel supported, cheered for, encouraged and celebrated. We are family, so things that happen in the lives of our members, both in and out of the gym, are important to us. I just happen to have the fun job of reaching out to them. I also help with social media and making sure we are providing content that helps those outside the gym as well.
What is your favorite thing about SCF?
You guys, this is a hard question! It is my social outlet and I LOVE seeing all my people, but my favorite thing is the care and attention we get from the coaches. They have been so great helping me through injury setbacks, and are so patient at explaining the “why” behind movements. They are even more patient at reminding me to stay focused and keep my eyes straight ahead. 🙂
What is your favorite memory at Sycamore CrossFit?
There are so many. But my most vivid one is getting my foot stuck in the band while up on a box working on my pull-ups. I totally lost my balance, grabbed the band, and slowly fell all the way to the ground. One of my many embarrassing moments, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
