Athlete Spotlight – Laura H.

Why did you choose Sycamore CrossFit? Why do you keep coming back?

I chose SCF because I was getting so sick of my normal gym routine. I’d walk into Charter and do the same thing everyday. I wasn’t even sure I was doing the movements right. I carry an athletic background, and I thrive in competitive environments. I longed for that but wasn’t sure that was an option until someone told me about SCF. I met with Carl 2 years before I came back again. I was too intimidated at the time, but when I came back the 2nd time, it was with my sister, Julie. Having her here with me gave us both the confidence to stay. We certainly held each other accountable…and now I’m hooked!

What’s your best story about the gym?

One of my favorite stories from SCF was the day I showed up with socks that said “Booty Call.” I randomly got them in a pack of socks, and never wore them for obvious reasons. I had them shoved in the back of my drawer. One day before class I was in a rush and just grabbed my last pair. Apparently I needed to do laundry! When I sat down to put them on, I swear I blushed! Tony was sitting right next to me when I realized which ones I had, and he started cracking up!!

What advice would you give to the person you were a year ago?

A year ago I wish I could have shaken myself to say how good I looked. Now looking back, and being post-partum, I just wished I would have realized how strong I really was. This time around, I’m relishing in the small feats! I know I’ll get back there someday, and this time I’m going to appreciate it more.

What accomplishment at the gym or in your nutrition are you the most proud of?

I’m most proud of winning the nutrition challenge back in 2018. I was always a “healthy” eater,  but I wasn’t educated enough. That challenge made me realize what kinds of foods I should be putting in my body, and how much I actually needed. That was certainly an eye opener! I saw my body change more in that 4 week period than I ever had. It wasn’t about the weight loss (I actually gained!) but more about the definition I started to see.
