Athlete of the Week – Bryan Westerby

Hi Carl,

We are excited to announce Bryan W. as this week’s Sycamore CrossFit Athlete of the Week! Bryan became a member shortly after we opened. He has had the privilege of seeing how much growth has happened through the life of Sycamore CrossFit, and has been able to see many lives impacted by the training that has taken place over the years. Bryan is one of the first people who will welcome you as a new member to the gym. He makes a point to learn your name and introduce himself, as well as making you feel comfortable while you are just learning the ropes. That kind of attention to detail seems to come naturally to Bryan. He is a detail guy, and pays attention to the small things both in his workouts as well as in his life. As you read his profile you will quickly see what we see in Bryan. He has the ability to find the positives. Even in the hardest workout Bryan will point us all back to a positive place, and whether he knows it or not, he can change the climate of a class with one positive spin on things. He also knows the value of the small details, and sees the benefit of functional fitness in his daily life. It is because of his eye for details that he has been able to challenge himself and reach some impressive PRs! In October Bryan added 20 lbs to his deadlift for a 1 x 10 PR of 225! Way to go Bryan! We are thankful you have been such a big part of the Sycamore CrossFit family for so many years. Your positive outlook as made as much of an impact on us as we have made on you. Thanks for all you bring to our world!

How would you explain your occupation to a 5 year old?

I have the best job ever  – working for The Suter Company.  We make a positive difference in the world by living a life that matters and serving others.  (Oh yes..we do this by making great food.  I am responsible for making sure this food is safe.)

How did you get started with CrossFit?

My son-in-law was coming to Sycamore to visit and we knew he did something called “CrossFit”.  We found Sycamore CrossFit for him.  While he was not able to go on his visit, we became interested!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I have been doing CrossFit for 5 years.  I started just after Sycamore CrossFit opened

What are your hobbies and interests outside CrossFit?

I love to spend time with my kids and the grandkids.  I am looking forward to more grandkids – with one more on the way and ready to meet the world in May.

What is your fitness background?

I have hardly any fitness background, expertise or training before Sycamore CrossFit.  So if I can do CrossFit anyone can!!!

Short-term training goal?

We are going on a very active trip to France and I want to be able to go, go, go with excess energy while I am there.

Long-term training goal?

I want to maintain my fitness and continue to be able to actively play with all my grandkids even as I retire and grow even older.

What is your favorite movement?

Row, row, row your boat!!! And KB swings – and of course sled pushes.  Deadlifts are fun also.  So many movements are fun  – it is hard to choose.

What is your least favorite movement?

I know the Snatch is good for me, but I find it challenging to do properly or even consistently.

Proudest moment in CrossFit so far?

Being able to put some weight overhead and do a full depth overhead squat.

What kept you coming back?

I could see progress I was making in the first few months and wanted to keep that fitness and continue to make progress.

Your advice for someone considering starting CrossFit?

It is really fun and the supportive nature of the members and coaches will really help you achieve your goals.

How has Sycamore CrossFit changed your life?

It is the small things that have made my life better!  I can haul 50lb bags of salt to the basement without resting or breaking a sweat.  I can carry my 2 grandkids around without any problem. I have more energy for the things I want to do in my life.
