Meet the Coach – Eric

Coach Eric is our head coach at Sycamore CrossFit.

He has been a coach with us since October 2015.

When/how did your health and fitness journey begin?

I started playing sports from a young age with youth soccer and baseball. I have also participated in football (elementary school into high school), track (middle school into high school), and wrestling (middle school to college). Once I stopped playing organized sports, I knew I wanted to continue being physically active in a similar environment, and that is what drew me to CrossFit.

When did you first start coming to Sycamore CrossFit?

I was a member in January of 2012, but I became a coach in October of 2015.

Why did you want to become a coach at SCF?

I knew right out of high school I wanted to do something that involved helping people stay active and healthy, and after finding CrossFit while in college, I fell in love with the ideology and methodology.

What education/certifications do you have?

I have my Associate’s Degree in Exercise Science and a CrossFit Level One Certificate. I will be going to take my Level 2 here in the next few months.

What is your favorite thing about coaching at Sycamore CrossFit?

I get to see people from all walks of life come through our doors and know that I will have a small part in changing their lives forever.

Why should people want to come take a class or do personal training with you?

I bring a very upbeat energy to my classes/personal training sessions. I try and make the hard work as fun as possible, so it doesn’t feel like something you have to do but something you want to do.

What is your favorite memory at Sycamore CrossFit?

Before I was a coach at Sycamore CrossFit, I was a very quiet and shy individual. You wouldn’t have recognized me back then from the man I am today. My favorite memory is the day Carl called me on the phone and asked me to become a coach. I was so excited to be asked because it was something I had wanted for a while. But I was nervous. How can I do this job if I can’t even talk to individuals, let alone bigger groups of people? Carl said something that day that was so simple but so powerful and it has helped shape the man and coach that I am today. He told me I either get over it, or I would never become the coach he knew I could be. So that day I made the choice to get over it, and my life has been forever changed. I think it’s similar to people being a little nervous to come join us at SCF. They need to choose to fight through the nerves in order to become the person they’re meant to be.
