7 Questions to Ask Yourself about Personal Training

At Sycamore CrossFit, we are known for group fitness classes, but that is certainly not all we do. Personal training is an amazing tool to get the results you want, but it does come at a cost. You are paying for 30 or 45 minutes of a professional coach’s time, along with the facility.

But the good news is, it’s worth the cost…as long as it’s the right fit for you. So how do you know if it’s the right fit for you? You’ll need to ask yourself a few questions first.

What are my goals?

When someone walks into Sycamore CrossFit the first thing we do is ask them about their goals. What are you trying to achieve? Weight loss? Building strength? Gaining endurance? Overall health?

Your answers to these questions will help guide your training plan. If you have a lot of physical limitations, want extra guidance, or want to work on very specific skills or goals, personal training may be a great fit.

Why is personal training better at helping me reach my goals? Every single workout is customized for you and exactly what you need to achieve your goals. When every workout is customized, you can reach your goals faster and more efficiently.

Do I prefer privacy?

We never push anyone into group classes, and we never push anyone into personal training, but sometimes there is a clear “right fit.” If you prefer privacy and don’t want to feel like anyone but your coach could be watching you, then personal training is a great choice.

Do I have a crazy schedule?

One of the huge benefits to personal training is that it is all scheduled around you. We set up times that work around your schedule and the timeframe you have available.

Are you only able to come in 1-2 days per week? We have packages that combine in-person personal training sessions with at-home workouts and personalized feedback.

Do I want/need the one-on-one attention?

We pride ourselves in the attention our professional coaches are able to give each athlete during a group class, but it is never going to compare to what they can provide in a one-on-one setting. If you are intimidated by weightlifting, are especially concerned with your form, or want to build confidence, personal training is perfect.

Your coach has his/her eyes on you the entire time. They are making sure you are doing every movement correctly, and they are constantly providing encouragement. They also get to know you and what works best for you, including how much feedback and encouragement to give.

Do I want to work on something specific?

Some of our clients who attend group classes like to add personal training in when they’re working on a specific skill. It can be difficult to spend the amount of time needed to learn olympic weightlifting, certain gymnastic skills, etc. in a group class setting. Personal training can be an excellent add-on to learn or perfect a skill.

Can I afford it?

There is a cost barrier. Personal training is not the same price as a membership to Planet Fitness, but it is also a vastly different service. You are paying for professionalism. You are paying for attention. You are paying for accountability. You are paying for results.

Can I afford not to?

Fitness and health are some of the most important things you can have in life. Why? They keep you alive!

Medical bills and prescriptions are incredibly expensive. Try to do a cost/benefit analysis. Could it be cheaper to spend money on fitness and nutrition to have better health?
