Athlete Spotlight – Sam G.

Why did you choose Sycamore CrossFit? Why do you keep coming back?

I originally chose Sycamore CrossFit because I was dating the brother of the owners and I needed to lose a serious amount of weight! I’ve always wanted to try CrossFit but because of me being on the heavier side I was honestly afraid. I keep coming back because the workouts constantly change, the coaches truly care about their athletes, the community is so diverse and supportive, and it’s the one thing in my life that has been a constant. It has pushed me past what I thought was possible mentally, physically, and emotionally and made me a better person! I’ve also seen such amazing results so there was no giving up on this!

What’s your best story about SCF?

This is a hard question as I don’t have just one. It is the very first workout of 1/2 Murph and doing something I never thought I would do, surrounded by people pushing you to keep going. It’s my first open and having people cheer you on like you do this for a living! It’s the 315lb PR deadlift, the 20” box jump after tears and mental blocks, the hanging knee raises lifting my body weight off the ground, the level method testing and knowing what I needed to do to improve and doing it, and the Rx running workouts that I never thought imaginable. It was watching Deanna and Michelle climb the rope in class for the first time. Chris W. improve, transform, and improve his mental health. Katie S. doing her first strict pull-up, Jennifer B. coming every day and struggling but still doing the work, and Mallory getting her first muscle-up! It’s never being alone and coach Eric and coach Nate being there for me when I was in my head. I literally cannot pick just one and I know I’m forgetting so many more!

What advice would you give the person you were a year ago?

The advice I would give myself a year ago would be the advice I would want to give to others that don’t think CrossFit is a fit for them because of the shape they are in:When you see these athletes in the games and how they become heroes in the sport of CrossFit, just because you don’t look like them doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do CrossFit. Everyone has to start somewhere and modifications are possible with the amazing coaches. It’s okay to not be where the rest of the people are. It’s okay to have to modify the modifications. Also, when you think it should get easier, your modifications get harder so it will feel like you are starting over but don’t give up. You may cry. You may get frustrated or mad. You may think it’s not worth it but the truth is, 2, 5, even 10 years later it will be worth it. It’s a long process and you need to buckle up and enjoy the ride because I promise you, you will not be the same person mentally, physically, emotionally that you were the first day you walked into those doors to the gym. You will be better, stronger, more consistent, confident, dedicated, and determined. You are inspiring others to do the same and there is no greater reward than that, I promise 💛

Sam has worked incredibly hard the past few years to achieve these amazing results! She has dialed in her nutrition and shown unbelievable consistency with her workouts. These were hard-earned results that we are incredibly proud of!
