Athlete Spotlight – Bill D.

Why did you choose Sycamore CrossFit? Why do you keep coming back?

I started at SCF 4/1/2014 because I was overweight and out of shape. I was unhappy with how I looked and felt, and I knew I needed to do something. A few of my coworkers had been doing CrossFit for a while with great results. With their encouragement, I decided to look for a local box and found SCF. I signed up for the free trial visit, and my journey began. It was so hard for me to walk through that door the first day. I was so uncomfortable, but immediately felt welcome. The SCF community is an amazing group of people that I look forward to spending time with week after week. That’s what keeps me coming back. I also appreciate how the gym has evolved over the years too.  Changes are always happening with new equipment, more space, etc. I’m really proud to be a member of this box.

What’s your best story about the gym?

My favorite story about this gym is how Carl, Phoebe, and all the coaches kept our community together through the COVID-19 lockdown. With the stay at home WODs, custom training, phone calls, and the private Facebook page, I felt connected with everyone throughout the stay-at home period. I felt like I was still at the gym even though I was working out at home. The online posts, and challenges were great. They kept me motivated and sane.

What advice would you give to the person you were a year ago?

I would tell myself to “keep it up.” I work really hard to maintain my discipline for working out. It’s so easy to fall off the wagon in terms of diet and exercise, so I constantly push myself to maintain my discipline. I try to set achievable goals to keep the motivation, and have learned to adapt to life’s interferences that cause me to miss the occasional WOD. So I constantly tell myself don’t stop.

What accomplishment at the gym or in your nutrition are you the most proud of?

I had two big wins at the gym recently. I finally achieved a 200 pound clean & jerk, and I completed Murph with the vest (twice!). These were both long term goals I’ve been shooting for. I think the fact that I’ve been consistently working out at SCF for over six years now and I still love it, and I’m still making gains is my biggest achievement.

Bill has worked so hard over the past six years to improve his health and fitness. He is a force to be reckoned with in the gym, and he is constantly improving and reaching PRs. We are so proud!
