Athlete of the Week – Dan Pevonka

We are thrilled to announce Dan P. as our Athlete of the Week! Dan is one of the regulars in our Thrive program and found it a great fit to provide a challenge and stay in shape. Dan has made Thrive a part of his regular routine and it provides him the varied movements and cardio that helps him to stay active well into retirement. Coming back from an injury can be challenging, both mentally as well as physically, and it is easy to let a setback derail your fitness. We are proud of Dan that he did not let his setback hinder his progress and made a great decision to join Thrive to meet his fitness goals. Dan always comes to class with a great attitude and willingness to get sweaty and work hard. Keep up the great work Dan, we look forward to you being part of the SCF family long into retirement!

I help to buy and sell companies and do a lot of work in the bankruptcy court.

How did you get started with CrossFit?

I was looking for an option for running, as 50 mile weeks was getting old and Mark Johnson suggested CrossFit.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?  

About two years

What are your hobbies and interests outside CrossFit?  

Golf, Golf, and more Golf.

What is your fitness background?  

I did lots of sports in high school and college, and then got lazy and really fat.  I started running to loss weight and ended up running several marathons.

Short-term training goal?  

Lose weight and gain flexibility.

Long-term training goal?  

I would love to do a Murph someday, but really just looking to be able to be active well into retirement.

What is your favorite movement?   

I enjoy cardio workouts with varied movements.

What is your least favorite movement?  

Burpees, and crab walk.

Proudest moment in CrossFit so far?  

Coming back from an injury and not just giving up.

What was your biggest obstacle to starting CrossFit and how did you overcome that?  

Getting started later in life when I thought you had to be a stud to do CrossFit.

What kept you coming back?  

The coaches are a huge help with scaling the workouts to each individual.  I probably would have quit after getting injured except for the introduction of the Thrive classes.

Your advice for someone considering starting CrossFit?  

Just do it.  Everything is scalable, and I would suggest Thrive for anyone who is interested in conditioning rather than throwing around big amounts of weights.

How has Sycamore CrossFit changed your life?  

Crossfit has help to start to reverse years of sitting behind desk, and has also introduced proper nutrition.  At least I now know what I am suppose to eat, the hard part is following through.
