Athlete of the Week – David Lesorgen

This week David joins the ranks as an Athlete of the Week for Sycamore CrossFit. A former powerlifter, David came to us knowing how to lift, but needed a change from the traditional gym routine. David is extremely coachable and is always looking to improve technique. Anything he learns he’s happy to share with other members as well. He finds a way to make time to get to the gym so he can be the best possible version of himself. You’re dedication is truly admirable, David. We are so glad to call you one of our own.

How would you explain your occupation to a 5 year old?

I work in a big building and make sure people do their jobs correctly.

How did you get started with CrossFit?  

My sister kept pushing me to try it.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

About a year.

What are your hobbies and interests outside CrossFit?

My kids take up most of my time.

What is your fitness background?  

I worked out 4-5 days a week at a traditional gym for about 5 years before starting CrossFit.

Short-term training goal?

Get better at climbing ropes.

Long-term training goal?  

Become proficient in kipping based movements as well as double unders.  Also I’d like to improve my cardio.

What is your favorite movement?  

Really anything shoulder or back related.

What is your least favorite movement?

Squat cleans, or burpees.

Proudest moment in CrossFit so far?  

Being athlete of the week of course!

What was your biggest obstacle to starting CrossFit and how did you overcome that?

I used to do more powerlifting, so I thought CrossFit looked really goofy and had doubts that it would work or be beneficial.

What kept you coming back?  

My sister and step mom convinced me to try a Saturday WOD, and within 5-6 minutes I had to stop because I thought I was going to puke or pass out.  Being unable to even come close completing that WOD made me want to come back.

Your advice for someone considering starting CrossFit?  

Just go.  You won’t regret it.

How has Sycamore CrossFit changed your life?  

After 1 year of CrossFit I am in overall better shape than I was after 5 years at a traditional gym. I have been an asthmatic my entire life, since starting CrossFit I rarely use my inhalers anymore that I was having to use on regular basis, probably 4-7 days a week.
